Recommendations for Northern Travel, most times of the year:

CLOTHES/ROPA: Dress warmly. Bring a coat or heavy sweatshirt, sturdy boots, maybe hat, scarf and gloves if you are easily chilled. Or buy the boots in town just 8km down the mountain -- rubber, custom cowboy, combat, or stock  -- from $6-$60 USD, or c$125-c$1200 NIO.

TRIP/VIAJE: Plan your trip in May or October for the annual horseshow (hípico), cattleshow (feria ganaderia), and rodeo (barrera); from November-February for the cooler winds (~55F)  and the coffee season; or from March to April to be in the coolest zone (~70F) in the hot season.

TOURS
:
There is Lots To Do -- but you sort of have to suss it out, ask around. The Tourism Industry in Jinotega is not well defined nor organized. However, there is a an abundance of activity related to Coffee, Moto-cross, Horses, Rivers, Lake Fishing, Eco-tourist Adventures, Historical and Cultural Tours. Contact the CANTUR or INTUR offices, and if you need more assistance, contact. info@hijuela.com, or Suzanne at La Biosfera, 8698-1439.  Rosario at the Hotel Solentuna Hem is a good source, and very accommodating. Her sister-in-law has what is probably the most easily accessible tour of a functioning coffee farm. If you find others, please drop a line to info@hijuela.com. For off-road motorcyclists there is a spectacular waterfalls and lovely farm with coffee beneficio off the dirt road between San Rafael del Norte and San Sebastian de Yali.; again, info@yahoo.com or Suzanne 8698-1439.

San Rafael del Norte,
some 20kms north, makes for a great guideless tour - Take the CoTran Norte bus for 20 cordobas. See the Sandino Museum (if closed the curator lives close, just ask); the church at Tepeyac where Father D'Andrea Odorico was pastor, and is now being considered for canonization, and you can sign the book of miracles; and the famous fresco in the Central Cathedral, where Jesus is having a conversation with the devil. See what comes to mind when you see it! There is swimming down by Los Encuentros where two rivers come together, and there is usually food and refreshments. There is also the Don't Miss appetizer, the chilaquiles at the Casita San Payo, which also has rooms; and there are quaint, inexpensive rooms at the Inn in front of the gas station, half block south on the corner. There are also two hermit caves you might convince a local to show you; and ask where there is cardamom being collected and toasted - it may or may not be in front of Tepeyac.
